Here's how to troubleshoot for the Bark browser extensions and the Bark for Chromebooks app on your child's computer(s).

Check to see if monitoring is working

  1. Open up your parent app / dashboard.
  2. Tap your kid's avatar at the top.
  3. Tap Monitoring.
  4. Depending on what you set up, you should see a green checkmark under Chrome, Edge, and/or Chromebook and a "Last analyzed" section:
is monitoring working on chrome, edge, or chromebook?
Missing a "Last analyzed" section? Then, revisit the Chrome, Edge, or Chromebook instructions to set up your kid's monitoring again.
Chrome, Edge, or Chromebook icons are completely missing from here? Let's check a few things to make sure monitoring is set up correctly.

Check to see if screen time & web filtering is working

  1. Open up your parent app / dashboard.
  2. Tap your kid's avatar at the top.
  3. Tap Screen Time.
  4. Tap the Devices tab at the top.
  5. Look for your kid's laptop here. Ideally, it'd have a green checkmark and a recent "Last seen" section:
Seeing "Screen Time protection has been disrupted" or "Last seen over 7 days ago"? Then, check out this guide for tips on fixing it.

Fix Chrome, Edge, or Chromebook Monitoring

Chrome or Edge isn't being monitored

  1. On your parent app / dashboard, make sure you're subscribed to Bark Premium in your account and billing settings.
  2. Next, tap Children in your parent app / dashboard.
  3. Tap your kid's avatar at the top.
  4. Tap Monitoring.
  5. Scroll down and look for your kid's email account.
    • Kid's email is not connected: That explains the original issue. It's an easy fix! Let's get their email connected to Bark:
      • On your kid's computer, open their Chrome or Edge browser.
      • Click on the circle-user-solid.svg profile icon on the top right. This shows you your kid's email if it's signed in.
      • Turn on sync, if applicable.
      • On your parent app / dashboard, connect that email to Bark.
      • Then, browse 5–10 sites on your kid's computer by clicking around Google or Wikipedia.
      • After some time, you should see Chrome or Edge monitoring is working in your parent app / dashboard.
    • Kid's email is connected: Great! Now, let's double-check that's the email your kid is using to sign into their computer browser:
      • On your kid's computer, open their Chrome or Edge browser.
      • Click on the circle-user-solid.svg profile icon on the top right. This shows you your kid's email if it's signed in.
      • Turn on sync, if applicable.
      • Does the email there match the email that is connected to Bark? If it does not, then get that other email connected to Bark!
      • Then, browse 5-10 sites on your kid's computer by clicking around Google or Wikipedia.
      • After some time, you should see Chrome or Edge monitoring is working in your parent app / dashboard.
  6. Still need help? Revisit our Chrome, Edge, or Chromebook instructions to set up your kid's monitoring again. Remember to turn off Guest Mode on their Chromebook as well.

My kid's computer isn't blocking websites and apps

Error when installing extension "This type of account cannot currently install extensions."

This is a limitation placed by Google on the account. It can be due to a couple of reasons:

  • Family Link is supervising the account
If you cannot install an extension on a Chromebook that is supervised by Family Link, it may be because you're on an older version of Chrome OS. Chrome OS 83+ supports Chrome extensions on Chromebooks supervised by Family Link. Get your kid's ChromeOS updated.
  • A school or organization is supervising the account
If your kid's school is supervising the account, then they likely have a digital safety solution in place, which is why they're blocking the installation of other Chrome extensions. Check with your school's IT department for more information. In the meantime, try using your kid's personal email account instead of a school email.

FAQs

How does Bark monitor Chrome and Edge browsing?

On computers and laptops, Bark monitors web browsing on Chrome and Edge — including website visits, searches, and incognito browsing. Just install the two Bark extensions on your child's Chromebook, Mac, or Windows computer browser (learn more).

To monitor web browsing on phones and tablets, follow this guide instead.

Do I need to install Bark on each profile of a shared computer?

If the computer is a shared device that has different logins (e.g. Bob has a profile, Renee has a profile, etc) then you'll want to follow the same steps for each child's profile!

Will the Bark for Chromebooks app need to be open the whole time?

After setup, you can click the X to close out the Bark for Chromebooks app. Rest assured, the app will be running in the background. To prevent your kid from using different profiles on their Chromebook that may not have the app installed, turn off Guest Mode.

What types of alerts might I get about my kid's browsing and searching?

If you've installed the Bark extensions on your child's computer browser, and Bark detects instances of bullying, sexual content, self-harm, or other worrisome content in your child's web browsing or searches, we will send you an alert.

If you've installed the Bark for Chromebooks app on your child's Chromebook as well, and Bark detects potential problems in your child's saved photos or videos, we will also send you an alert.

If you've set up app and site blocking on a device, you'll also get alerts for blocked sites that were categorized as Sexual Content.

Can Bark monitor more than just Chrome browsing?

Yes, Bark can do more than just monitor Chrome browsing! With the Bark Home, you can block apps and sites on any computer. This includes blocking apps and sites whether your kid accesses them on Chrome, Edge, or another app.

While Bark Home won't alert you in the same way as the Bark extensions for browsing and searching issues, the Bark Home will help you manage safe and responsible internet use on your kid's laptop by blocking access to specific apps and sites.

In addition, when you set up the Bark for Chromebooks app on your kid's Chromebook, it can monitor the images and videos saved to the Chromebook device storage for worrisome content.

Am I able to use Family Link and Bark on a Chromebook?

You can continue using Family Link and Bark together on your kid's Chromebook.

If you cannot install a Chrome extension on a Chromebook that is supervised by Family Link, it may be because you're on an older version of Chrome OS. Chrome OS 83+ supports Chrome extensions on Chromebooks supervised by Family Link. Get your kid's ChromeOS updated.
