Google Play app downloads and updates stuck "pending" or "Waiting for Wi-Fi"

Enable Mobile Data first, then clear the Play Store cache or uninstall updates if downloads remain stuck.

The Google Play Store app is used to download apps on Android devices like the Bark Phone. If app downloads or updates are stuck in the Play Store, follow these steps:

1. Verify Connection

  1. On your kid's device, swipe down from the top of the screen.

  2. Make sure Mobile Data is enabled and Wi-Fi is on if possible.

  3. Check the Play Store to see if downloads resume. It may take a few minutes to catch up.

  4. If the issue persists, restart the device.

  5. If it's still not working, move to the next step.

2. Check app and site blocking rules

  1. Use this guide to ensure these are allowed:

    1. App Stores & System Updates category

    2. Collaboration category

    3. Gmail toggle

    4. Google Workspace toggle

  2. If still stuck, allow these as well:

    1. Unidentifiable Traffic

    2. Uncategorized Apps & Sites

  3. If it's still not working, check Recently blocked activity logs to allow Google-related blocks.

  4. Tap ||| in the navigation bar and close Play Store by swiping it away or selecting Close all.

  5. Check the Play Store to see if downloads resume. It may take a few minutes to catch up.

  6. If the issue persists, move to the next step.

3. Allow Play Store downloads “Over any network”

  1. On the Play Store app, tap the profile icon.

  2. Tap Settings > Network Preferences > App download preference > Set to Over any network.

  3. Tap ||| in the navigation bar and close Play Store by swiping it away or selecting Close all.

  4. Check the Play Store to see if downloads resume. It may take a few minutes to catch up.

  5. If the issue persists, move to the next step.

4. Check “Allowed networks for apps” in settings

  1. Open the Settings app.

  2. Tap Connections > Data usage.

  3. Tap Allowed networks for apps.

  4. Enter a device code.

  5. Tap the ||| button on the bottom navigation bar, then tap Settings to return to where you left off.

  6. Find Google Play and look at the gray text under it. If it says Wi-Fi Only, that's the problem:

    1. Tap the app.

    2. Change it to Mobile data or Wi-Fi.

    3. Tap ||| in the navigation bar and close Play Store by swiping it away or selecting Close all.

    4. Check the Play Store to see if downloads resume. It may take a few minutes to catch up.

    5. If the issue persists, move to the next step.

5. Clear Play Store data

  1. On your child's device, open the ⚙ Settings app > tap Apps.

  2. Enter a device code, if prompted.

  3. Tap Google Play Store.

  4. Tap Storage > Clear data.

  5. Tap < back to the settings that show a list of apps.

  6. Tap Google Play Services.

  7. Tap Storage > Clear cache.

  8. Tap ||| in the navigation bar and close Play Store by swiping it away or selecting Close all.

  9. Check the Play Store to see if downloads resume. It may take a few minutes to catch up.

  10. If the issue persists, move to the next step.

6. Uninstall Play Store updates

  1. On your child's device, open the ⚙ Settings app.

  2. Tap Apps.

  3. Enter a device code, if prompted.

  4. Tap Google Play Store.

  5. Tap the three dots on the top right.

  6. Tap Uninstall Updates.

  7. Tap ||| in the navigation bar and close Play Store by swiping it away or selecting Close all.

  8. Check the Play Store to see if downloads resume. It may take a few minutes to catch up.

  9. If the issue persists, move to the next step.

7. Try a different network

If this works on another network, it means your original network was blocking Google Play. Here's some ways to test the device on another network:

  • Turn off Wi-Fi and use mobile data only.

  • Connect to a different Wi-Fi network.

  • Use personal hotspot from another device.

  • Try at a coffee shop or library.
