Recommended Sleep/Wake Settings for Windows

The Bark Desktop App is set to automatically analyze your child's iOS device texts, photos, and more when it detects the child's iOS device over Wi-Fi and it has been longer than 6 hours since the last analysis for that device. However, the analyses will not happen automatically if the computer is asleep, turned off, or if the lid is closed.

In this article, we will be looking at the sleep settings on your Windows computer to ensure your child's iOS device continues to be monitored for worrisome activity as often as possible.

NOTE: The steps vary slightly based on your Windows version.

Windows 7 and 8

STEP 1. Open the Control Panel from your Start menu

STEP 2. Click Hardware and Sound

STEP 3. Click Power options or Change power-saving settings

STEP 4. Click the Change Plan link under any of the plans to get the Edit Plan Settings window as shown below

STEP 5. To prevent the computer from going to Sleep, select 5 hours or Never
  • If on a laptop, do this for both On Battery and Plugged In
  • You can still set the display to turn off as quickly as you'd like -- only Sleep, Hibernation, or Shut Down states will stop the automatic backups from occurring

STEP 6. When you have completed the power settings changes, click the Save changes button before closing the window.

NOTE: You can also change additional advanced settings by clicking on "Change advanced power settings" towards the bottom left of the window.  See more information from Microsoft about the shut down, sleep, or hibernate features.

Is your Windows 7 or 8 computer a laptop?

You can also adjust what happens when you close the lid, so that it does not go to sleep!

STEP 1: Right-click on the battery icon on the taskbar and then click Power Options.

STEP 2: In the left-pane of Power Options window, click Choose what closing the lid does link. This action will open a System Settings window.

STEP 3: In the Power and sleep buttons and lid settings section, you will see When I close the lid option. Select Do nothing for both On battery and Plugged in options.

STEP 4: Click Save changes button. That’s it! If you close the laptop lid/screen, it will not put the Bark Desktop App to sleep, meaning your child's iPhone or iPad can be analyzed more often.

Windows 10

STEP 1. Open the Start menu
STEP 2. Select the Settings app

STEP 3. Choose System

STEP 4. Select Power & Sleep in the left-hand column (see below)

STEP 5. Scroll down to the Sleep section

STEP 6. Set the drop-down menu for both options shown below to be 5 hours or Never.

For more power saving options, select Additional power settings to change how your device uses power. See more information from Microsoft about the shut down, sleep, or hibernate features.
