Installing or Updating Bark for Kids on Androids Supervised with Family Link

If your child has a Bark Phone™, read this other article instead. If your child has an Android that is not a Bark Phone, continue reading below.

Background

When installing the Bark for Kids app, you may have come across a security prompt warning you about installing apps from "unknown sources." (What are apps from unknown sources?)

In our How to Monitor Android instructions, we show you how to adjust the "unknown sources" setting in the Settings app. If you use Family Link, you also have to adjust the "unknown sources" setting inside of your Family Link parent app. Below we show you how!

Get Started

STEP 1: Open your parent Family Link app on your phone. It looks like this:

STEP 2: Tap the ☰ menu > your child's name > Controls.

STEP 3: Select the applicable phone icon 📱 near the top, as seen in the example below:

STEP 4: Tap on Device Settings.

STEP 5: Tap the slider next to Apps from Unknown Sources so that it is enabled, as seen in the example below:

Feel free to disable the Apps from Unknown Sources setting after you've successfully installed Bark for Kids on your child's phone, if you like. Just remember you'll have to do this adjustment again when installing new versions of the Bark for Kids app.

Alternate Route

If your Family Link parent app does not look like the options above, let's try this:

STEP 1: Navigate to families.google.com on a web browser and log in as the family supervisor if prompted.

STEP 2: Select your child's name.

STEP 3: Scroll down to Device Settings and select the applicable device. This is an example:
