Check available storage space on your devices

Low storage can affect iOS monitoring. Here's how to check β€” and fix it.

Updated yesterday

iOS monitoring can stop working if there isn't enough storage on your child's device or on your computer (if you're using the computer method). Use the sections below to check storage on whichever device applies to you.

πŸ’‘ Did you know? If you're using the Bark Sync to monitor your child's iOS device, you don't need to worry about your computer's storage β€” only your child's device storage applies.

iPhone or iPad

Check storage space on your child's iOS device

If your child's device has less than 5% free storage, analysis will take a long time or may fail. To check:

  1. Open the Settings app.

  2. Tap General.

  3. Tap iPhone/iPad Storage.

  4. Look at the X GB out of Y GB section.

    • 95% or more storage is used: Free up space until at least 5% is available. Bark needs this space to transfer files from the device.

    • Less than 95% storage is used: You're good β€” just make sure your computer has enough storage too.

Free up space on your child's iOS device

Photos, videos, GIFs, and iMessages take up a lot of space. Here are some ways to free some up:

  • Move photos and videos to a cloud platform β€” Apps like Google Drive or Dropbox work great. (Bonus: connect their Google Drive or Dropbox to Bark to get those files monitored too!)

  • Optimize photo storage β€” Learn more.

  • Transfer photos and videos to a computer β€” Learn how.

  • Deleting iMessages that are over 1 year old β€” To remove messages older than 1 year:

    • On your kid's device, open the Settings app.

    • Tap on Messages.

    • Under Message History, tap where it says Keep Messages.

    • Choose 1 Year.

    • This will delete all iMessages older than 1 year, freeing up space.
