Snapchat alerts show "unknown" contacts

Snapchat changes have limited Bark's ability to show contact names, but monitoring and alerts still work.

Unknown in Snapchat chats example

Bark monitors Snapchat text chats on connected Android devices, including the Bark Phone. In October 2024, Snapchat made updates that affected Bark's ability to identify senders, receivers, and authors in Snapchat conversations.

While this limits how contact names are displayed, Bark still scans Snapchat messages for potential dangers and sends alerts when needed. In these cases, you'll see "Unknown" as a placeholder instead of a contact name.

Want to ask Snapchat to change this?

We believe Snapchat can do more to protect kids on their platform. If you'd like to share your feedback with them directly:

  • Message them on X (Twitter)
Send a message like: "Hey @snapchatsupport, please open your DM API to the good guys like @barktechco so they can keep my children safer online!"

  • Message their support team directly
In the Snapchat app, go to your profile (top left), then tap Settings āš™ļø > scroll down to ā€œI have a suggestion" > select Friends. You can paste this message: ā€œPlease open your direct message API to @barktechnologies to help keep kids safe online!ā€ Choose Snaps as the topic, then click Submit.
