On July 1, 2013, the FTC updated the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) to modernize rules that were first passed in 1998.
COPPA was created to stop digital companies from targeting kids under 13 with personalized marketing. As the internet grew, companies could easily collect personal data from children, track their activity, and use that information to target them with ads.
What this means for your Bark account: If you add a child under 13, we are legally required to have verifiable parental or guardian consent before we can monitor their accounts. To give consent, you'll need a credit or debit card on file.
