Disable Guest Mode, Incognito Mode, & Secure DNS on Chrome (Mac)

Background

Guest Mode is a feature on Google Chrome that allows someone to browse the web without being signed in to an account. Because Bark's Chrome monitoring follows your child's account, disabling guest mode ensures Bark will be monitoring your child's Chrome browsing on their computer. These instructions also disable Incognito Mode and Secure DNS mode on Chrome.

Each platform has different steps, so we've put together guides for Windows, Mac, and Chromebooks:

Instructions for Mac

Watch this video to learn how to disable Chrome Guest Mode on a Mac. If you'd like some additional tips — or if the video doesn't play — follow the step-by-step instructions written below.

STEP 1: Start by pressing Shift + Cmd + U to bring up the Utilities folder on your Mac.

NOTE: You can also find the Utilities folder in Finder > Applications.

STEP 2: Double-click on Terminal.

STEP 3: Copy and paste the following command into Terminal and press Enter:

defaults write com.google.Chrome BrowserGuestModeEnabled -bool false

STEP 4: Copy and paste the following command into Terminal and press Enter:

defaults write com.google.Chrome BrowserAddPersonEnabled -bool false

STEP 5: Copy and paste the following command into Terminal and press Enter:

defaults write com.google.Chrome IncognitoModeAvailability -integer 1

STEP 6: Copy and paste the following command into Terminal and press Enter:

defaults write com.google.Chrome IPFSEnabled -integer 0

STEP 7: Restart your computer.
Next time you open Chrome, you will notice that Guest Mode, Incognito Mode, and the ability for your child to add additional email accounts/profiles will be disabled. Success!

Re-enable Guest Mode, Incognito Mode, & Secure DNS

STEP 6: Copy and paste the following command into Terminal and press Enter:

defaults write com.google.Chrome IPFSEnabled -integer 1

STEP 7: Restart your computer.

Next time you open Chrome, you will notice that Guest Mode, Incognito Mode, Secure DNS, and the ability for your child to add additional email accounts/profiles will be enabled.
